Biography: Born on October 27, 1944 in Kyiv (Ukraine). 15-years-old he began to study music (private piano lessons with F. Kalikhman, a pupil of Rakhmaninov, and music theory with O.Guberman). From 1962 studied composition with Prof. B. Ljatoshyns'kyj and A. Shtoharenko at the Kyiv State P.Tchaikovsky Conservatoire from which he graduated in 1968. In 60es he (together with his friends Valentin Silvestrov, Leonid Hrabovs'kyj and Vitalij Hodzjats'kyj) formed the informal group, known in Western countries as "Kiev Avant-Guarde". Performance of his "Gradations" (January 1980) by the New York Philharmony Orchestra under Zubin Meta was an important event in his life. It is noteworthy that the piece was performed after 14 years from the moment of its creation. In 1968 he joined Ukrainian Composers' Union. Since 1968 his music has been performed in many cities of the world: New York, Boston, Berlin, Las Vegas, London, Zagreb and Bratislava. He was permanent participant in such festivals of new music as "Season's Premieres", "Kyiv-Music Fest", etc. In 1997 he was awarded B.Ljatoshyns'kyj Prize.
